Stage/Theatre Category

Posted by Senior Staff @ 2:30 am (link)

This is a notification update of category name change for the General category.

We have decided to change the Stage Shows category name to Stage/Theatre as we felt that it reflected the content of the category more accurately. All previous fanlistings from the Stage Shows category continue to be listed in the new Stage/Theatre category and all subcategories are the same.

We hope you are happy with this change but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a message in the Stage/Theatre forum for the category staffer to answer. Thanks. :)

Category Status Page

Posted by Senior Staff @ 1:19 am (link)

This is a site update of an announcement for the General category.

This is just a small announcement about changes to the Category Status page at TFL. We have merged this page with the category list (which just gives descriptions of the categories). Also, the page is now run off a script which should make it easier for us to update visitors of backlogs and staff changes.

‘Last Updated’ date – clarification

Posted by Senior Staff @ 1:36 pm (link)

This is a announcement update of a rule change for the General category.

After some discussion, we have decided to clarify the ‘last updated’ date rule at TFL:

8. You must have an ‘last updated’ date on your fanlisting.

* It must be in an easy-to-locate place (i.e. splash page or main page).
* You MUST either write out the month (4 March, 2005) or if you use a numerical date, you MUST provide a key/legend immediately before or after the date, explaining the format used (4/5/2005 – dd/mm/yyyy).
As more than one date format is considered ‘standard’, you are required to provide a clear way to read the date regardless of the format used. Failing to use either suggested format could result in your fanlisting being added to the troubles list.

All this means is that we are allowing you to use a ‘key’ to show what date format you are using, if you wish.

‘Last Updated’ dates on fanlistings

Posted by Senior Staff @ 5:46 am (link)

This is a update of a rule change for the General category.

This is just an announcement so fanlisting owners are aware of a new troubles e-mail that you may get. When TFL updated our site rules we included something new:

8. You must have an ‘last updated’ date on your fanlisting.

* It must be in an easy-to-locate place (i.e. splash page or main page).
* The date must be written out (ie. 4th March, 2005). UK or US formats (i.e. dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy) are potentially confusing. For instance 03/04/05 could be the 3rd of April or the 4th of March!

The main reasons for this were clarity for us, and your visitors. Dates specific for the US (mm/dd/yy) or Europe/Australiasia (dd/mm/yy) can mean fanlistings look un-updated to certain people.

We would appreciate if owners using dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy formats could switch to something clearer. ie. 9 April, 2005 or April 9th, 2005 to display their last updated dates.

Multiple subjects at one fanlisting

Posted by Senior Staff @ 10:05 pm (link)

This is a update of a rule change for the General category.

After a long period of discussion, TFL has decided on a policy regarding multiple subjects at/on one site.

TFL prefers each fanlisting to be on its own site. However, we realise there is an appeal to have fanlistings on the same site if they are related.

Fanlistings for similar topics (ie. a movie and a sequel) can share the same site. However, they must either:

- have their own join form, codes and members list

(OR)

- have individual codes and a ‘favourite’ feature, where the member may choose which topic they are a fan of. The fanlisting also must be clearly marked for what it covers.

Fanlistings that can not be ‘merged’ are those for a character and actor and topics which are significantly different from the other. They can, of course, have the same splash page – but must link off to their individual pages.

TFL Survey

Posted by Senior Staff @ 12:44 am (link)

This is a update of announcement for the General category.

TFL has been around for so many years, and although visitors often contact us through the board and contact forms with their thoughts, complaints, and suggestions, we’ve never really had a comprehensive visitor survey that covers all aspects of TFL. The network relies heavily on visitor feedback, so we’re quite eager to see what everyone thinks! :)

For this reason the Network has created a survey to get feedback on all aspects of TFL. From our applications to our contact forms.

We’d appreciate it if all TFL users could take the time to complete the survey. We realise it is long and in-depth so it has been split into sections (and even sub-sections!). There are no questions on individual categories, but we do have the Staff Feedback forms if you want to make a comment on a specific member of the staff team.

Again, we do encourage everyone to fill in the survey as we do want as much feedback on the network as possible. :)

Advertising/TV Channels – new category!

Posted by Bonnie @ 7:21 pm (link)

This is a notification update of a new category for the General category.

We have a brand new category here at The Fanlistings Network: the Advertising/TV Channels category! It’s only quite small at the moment (54 fanlistings) but we decided to create it as these fanlistings didn’t really fit in the TV/Movie/Book Stuff category.

The following types of fanlistings should now be applied for in this category:

  • TV channels
  • TV commercials
  • Print advertisements
  • Characters from advertising
  • Trailers (no longer accepted but listed in this category)

Everyone who owns a fanlisting affected by this change should receive an email shortly. :)

Welcome to the new little category!

80 x 15 buttons

Posted by Senior Staff @ 3:01 am (link)

This is a general update of button sizes for the General category.

TFL now has a nice selection of buttons in the ever-popular size of 80 x 15, for those of you who prefer using smaller sizes. :) You can see the new collection of buttons here, in the Link Here section of the site. We hope you enjoy them!

Updated Rules

Posted by Senior Staff @ 5:26 am (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

After planning this for a long time, the TFL Rules page has had a re-vamp! There are no changes to TFL policy however, we have cleaned the rules page up and split the rules into two lists: rules for applying for fanlistings and rules for maintaining fanlistings.

Hopefully this will make our rules page easier to read and follow! More suggestions for maintaining fanlistings are now located in the For FL Owners section.

Legalities and Formalities

Posted by Senior Staff @ 4:14 am (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

We’ve had an increase in the number of complaints regarding owners using names, images and information without the owners permission. So, we decided to add a new section to the ‘For FL Owners’ section of TFL. It aims to cover copyright, legal issues and formalities:

Legalities and Formalities

While none of the information there is 100% legal advice it does cover the basic issues that are brought to us – fanlisting owners taking images or information without giving credit back to the original source. So please have a look at the information on this page :).

Staff Feedback

Posted by Senior Staff @ 11:48 pm (link)

This is a notification update of staff feedback for the General category.

The senior staff is currently working on a very comprehensive, in-depth survey for visitors and staffers of TFL in order to gain knowledge of how the network is perceived by the visitors. As a separate part of this survey, we have made a staff feedback page for you to fill out.

The feedback page can be seen here. Alternatively, you can find it on the main site’s menu under ‘Interactive’. As you can see, the staffers are divided up by ‘rank’, much like the profiles page. Individual staffers can be commented on simply by clicking his or her name. This survey covers three aspects of the staffer’s job: the commenter’s overall experience with the staffer, their opinion on the staffer’s conduct, and any specific problems they might have experienced with the staffer.

Please note that all comments, complaints, etc. are completely anonymous, so please submit a review if you have something to say! Aside from the senior staff, no one will be able to view their reviews or the reviews of their fellow staffers. :)

Update Info and Change Email forms

Posted by Senior Staff @ 9:02 pm (link)

This is a notification update of forms changed for the General category.

The moved form has now been re-named to the Update Info form. We felt this title was more descriptive for the form and its purpose, considering that some of the moved forms that staffers were receiving were for fanlistings that hadn’t necessarily moved, but needed to be updated in some way. The look and function of the form hasn’t changed much (if at all), so don’t be nervous about sending in a form or anything!

We also have a new form all together, and that is the Change Email form. This is basically just a way for fanlisting owners (ie: you!) to send in a request for your email address to be changed throughout the network without having to send in a ton of different contact/update info forms to all the categories in which you have fanlistings. All the relevant information related to this form is on the actual page itself, and since it’s all pretty much straight-forward, I don’t think there’s anything more that needs to be said about it, really!

We hope you enjoy the new forms! Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

LiveJournal syndication

Posted by Senior Staff @ 10:47 am (link)

This is a notification update of new LJ syndicated account for the General category.

To those of you who receive (or would like to receive) updates from this blog on your LiveJournal friends list:

Due to the various problems we’ve been having lately with the old LiveJournal syndicated account, we have decided to create a new one. Unfortunately, this means that everyone who had the old one on their friends list will have to add the new feed to their friends lists. Feel free to delete the old one with the username thefanlistings, as it will no longer be updated. Our new account has the username tfl_updates.

Add the tfl_updates syndicated account to your LiveJournal friends list

For those of you unfamiliar with syndicated accounts, please see the LiveJournal FAQ: What is LiveJournal’s syndication feature?

Sorry for the inconvenience, everyone!

Repeated neglect

Posted by Senior Staff @ 11:55 am (link)

This is a notification update of a rules change for the General category.

After a great deal of discussion, we have decided to officially implement a new guideline for both staffers and applicants regarding fanlistings that are repeatedly neglected. After having been on the troubles list twice for either: a) lack of updating; or b) members list neglect, a fanlisting found to be neglected for the third time may be removed from the network if the troubles staffer in charge deems it appropriate and a senior staffer confirms that the removal can go ahead. This does not apply to other troubles issues, such as dead links, incorrect links to TFL, or unfair rules. You will receive a personalised email if your fanlisting is removed for repeated neglect. We do not expect removals of this nature to occur on a regular basis.

The Rules page has been updated accordingly, and any questions about this new guideline should be directed toward the senior staff via the contact form.

Rule change

Posted by Senior Staff @ 1:09 pm (link)

This is a notification update of a rules change for the General category.

Rule #10 on the Rules page has been updated to reflect some new changes to our policy.

“In theory, there is no limit to the number of fanlistings you can have in total. Just make sure you’ll still have enough time and energy to give each fanlisting the attention it deserves. Don’t apply for a fanlisting if you think you won’t have the time to complete or maintain it. Please remember that the staff has the right to deny applications based on a history of overdue fanlistings, unreasonable requests for extensions, a history of not keeping fanlistings updated, or any other problems previously experienced with the applicant. If the staff member dealing with your application personally feels that you have too many fanlistings on upcoming or on the troubles list, s/he reserves the right to reject your application, or hold it until some of your upcoming fanlistings are completed. This is entirely up to the discretion of the staffer.

The bolded section above is the part that has been added. All individual category limits have been removed, and the staff members have been informed that they may use their own personal judgement when deciding whether a person has too many fanlistings on upcoming, or too many fanlistings on troubles, to be approved for further fanlistings.

Any queries about this new guideline can be directed to the senior staff via the contact form.

Comics – New Subcats & Rules

Posted by Mella @ 11:35 pm (link)

This is a update of for the Comics, General category.

Comics has now been split into the following subcategories: Artists/Writers, Characters, Companies/Franchises, Relationships, Series/Titles, General and Miscellaneous. I am currently going through each TFL category and moving/cross-listing all the fanlistings that immediately strike me as comics-related. My being human and not possibly knowing _everything_ there is to know about comics, I’m sure I will miss some listings. If you believe your fanlisting better belongs in comics or should be cross-listed under one of the new comics subcategories, send in an application with your request in the comments box.

In the case of relationship fanlistings I will only cross-list those fanlistings that appear to cover or mention that they cover the comics as well as the film/tv versions. This is to keep in line with the two current comics rules below:

+ Comics that have been adapted to films or television shows will be approved separatly from their film and tv versions. If you wish to be approved for both, please apply in both categories and indicate this in the comment section.
+ Remember, it is your responsibility to apply for your fanlisting to be cross-listed if it falls under more than one category.

The comics rules, as a whole, have changed slightly to accommodate the new subcategory structure, please review the new comics rules.

I will start on applications after I’ve gone through and moved/cross-listed as many fanlistings as I can. With the Holidays, the TAFL non-manga move over and the sub-categorizing things got a little hectic and I know I’m a little behind. Thanks for being patient. :)

Comics – Rule Change

Posted by Mella @ 10:56 pm (link)

This is a update of for the Comics, General category.

Just a note letting everyone know that there has been a small rule change. The newly edited rule is as follows:

“Any graphic novels or “comic books” which are Japanese in origin and have been released translated into English belong in the Anime/Manga category. Translations are NOT considered different than the original, and will not be approved in this category. Notice the emphasis on Japanese. Any graphic novels of Eastern origin that may pass as manga to those unfamiliar with the distinction – for example, Korean graphic novels, or manwha – belong in Comics and not in Anime/Manga.”

In accordance with this new rule, all fanlistings not of Japanese origin will eventually be transferred over from TAFL to Comics. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at comics @ thefanlistings.org.

The Anime Fanlistings Network

Posted by Senior Staff @ 9:58 am (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

The various Anime/Manga categories here at TFL have moved to a new network, The Anime Fanlistings Network. This new network is an extension of The Fanlistings Network, and remains closely partnered with TFL, but it is under new management. This means that there is a separate staff team, and the rules and regulations may differ from those we have at TFL.

Please be patient while everything at the new network settles down a bit. The majority of the pages at TFL have been updated with information about the new network, so nobody should be confused about the whereabouts of the anime/manga fanlistings, but there may still be some references to the old Anime/Manga categories. Those will be removed/modified as we spot them!

The decision to create this new network was made when we realised that the number of Anime/Manga fanlistings was growing at an extraordinary rate. We also noticed that while the TFL Senior Staff is able to make staffing and rule decisions about the majority of our categories, we found ourselves unqualified to make such decisions about the Anime/Manga categories, simply because anime/manga is such a specialised area of which we know next to nothing.

The enthusiasm of one of the Anime/Manga category staffers, Danielle, prompted us to offer her the opportunity to take the Anime/Manga categories to a brand new network, to manage separately. She took us up on the offer, and on September 26th, 2004, The Anime Fanlistings Network was born. All existing anime/manga fanlistings have been moved over to the new network, and any further communication with the Anime/Manga category staff should be done via the new network. Please visit The Anime Fanlistings Network to browse anime/manga fanlistings or create/manage your own.

Anyway, we hope you will all enjoy the new network! Have fun!
